At ancient schools, boys started to attend when they were six or seven. They had to go to three different schools. One for sports, one for music, and one from reading and writing. If the family of the boy had enough money, they could get a paidagogos who would accompany the boy to schools to make sure that he was safe, arrived at the school, and behaved. These paidagogos would help the boys with their homework. If the family had more than one boy, they would share one paidagogos. Often times the paidagogos were good friends of the boys.
