Direct Democracy
Direct Democracy is when governmental decisions are made by a big assembly of all eligible citizens who wanted to take part. Sometimes there had to be 6000 citizens. Today the general population elects a small group of people every four years to make all of the governmental decisions on behalf of the poeple.
Assembly of Eligible Citizens
The Athenian Assembly: the ancestor of a modern day parliament sitting. The assembly would meet at least 40 times a year in a large open-air area on the side of a hill in Athens called the Pnyx.
Only male citizens over the age of 20 were allowed to take part in the assembly. In theory, any member of the assembly could speak and make proposals and everyone at the assembly could vote on each issue by a show of hands.
